GynecomastiaConveniently located to service Ridgewood and Bergen County NJ

Gynecomastia is a common condition that affects nearly half of all men, resulting in localized fat and/or glandular tissue in the breasts. Male breast reduction may be performed using liposuction, surgery or a combination of the two, depending on the amount and type of tissue found in the breasts. If the breasts consist of mostly fatty tissue, liposuction may be used to suction out fat from an incision in the nipple or underarm areas. For breasts with an excessive amount of glandular tissue, excision surgery may be performed, which requires cutting away the excess fat, skin and tissue through a larger incision. Your surgeon will determine which technique is best for you based on your individual goals for surgery. For most patients, breast reduction surgery produces a flatter, more well-defined chest that can last for many years, as long as patients maintain a stable weight.

Who Is in Need of Gynecomastia Surgery?

Male patients who have protruding breasts due to the presence of too much fat and/or glandular tissue are ideal candidates for a male breast reduction procedure. They must be in good health for the procedure, since pre-existing health conditions can increase the chance of complications.

Patients who still need to lose a significant amount of weight and are in the process of doing so are advised to reach their target weight prior to the procedure. It’s also recommended that patients quit tobacco use and steroids since healing may be can compromised.

Your Consultation

Patients intent on undergoing gynecomastia surgery will schedule an in person consultation with Dr. Ganchi. This will ensure proper assessment and communication of specific goals.

During a consultation, the patient will be examined, and questions regarding their health and medical history will be reviewed. It will be necessary to discuss allergies, past procedures, medication use and more. Photographs may be taken to serve as a reference.

During the consultation, more information will be provided regarding the procedure and what patients must do to prepare for it, along with recovery directions. While those details are being discussed, any questions or concerns that patients might have regarding the surgical procedure can be addressed. This will help reassure patients regarding the decision to proceed.

Once the patient has been cleared to undergo a male breast reduction procedure, a surgical plan will be created. A date will then be set for the surgery.

Your Gynecomastia Surgery Session

Patients are made comfortable via anesthesia at the start of male breast reduction. Incisions will then be made so that the excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin can be removed. Once the removal is complete, the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures and covered with surgical bandages. A compression vest will be worn for several weeks to help control swelling.

Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery and Healing

Following gynecomastia surgery, patients are advised to rest during the recovery period. Instructions will be provided in regard to the care of the affected areas; patients will need to follow care directions as closely as possible. Time off from work will be required.

Sleeping on one’s back in a slightly elevated position is ideal. No physically strenuous activities should be performed for at least three weeks. Light exercises such as short walks can help speed up the recovery process by increasing blood circulation.

Patients will come in for a follow-up appointment in order to check on the status of their healing and to ensure that there are no complications. Sutures will be removed at this time.
