What Is Breast Fat Grafting?
Breast fat grafting is a surgical procedure for breast augmentation that uses the patient’s own body fat to create enlargement and symmetry. During the procedure, also known as autologous fat grafting, the surgeon removes fat with liposuction from areas of the body with a surplus. The harvested fat is refined and transferred into the breasts for results that look and feel natural.
By using the patient’s own fat, the hard look and feel often associated with implants is eliminated. Many women also like the idea that a foreign material has not been inserted into their bodies. The cosmetic benefit of fat grafting is that the area, usually the abdomen, from which the fat is taken becomes slimmer and more contoured.
Ideal Candidates for Breast Fat Grafting
If you want to add volume, fullness, or projection to your breasts, you may be an ideal candidate for breast augmentation by autologous fat grafting. Fat-grafting breast augmentation is ideal for nearly any woman who wants subtler breast enhancement without the use of saline or silicone implants.
The patient should be within a normal range of their healthy weight. Substantial weight loss after the procedure could affect long-term results and is not recommended. It is important that you’re in good overall health, since certain pre-existing conditions can affect the safety of surgical procedures. Avoid tobacco use before the surgery. Having a positive outlook and realistic expectations will also help you achieve the best results.
Your Consultation
During your consultation, you and Dr. Ganchi will spend time discussing the outcome that you hope to achieve. The doctor will assess the firmness, shape, and volume of your breasts, as well as the available donor areas for fat transfer.
The doctor will review your medical history. It’s important for Dr. Ganchi to know about any underlying conditions, allergies, current medications, or prior surgeries when planning your procedure.

Fat-Grafting Breast Procedure
A breast fat transfer procedure involves three steps. First, fat is removed using liposuction, in which a cannula (a thin, hollow tube) is inserted through small incisions, and then moved back and forth to loosen excess fat, which is suctioned out using a vacuum or a cannula-attached syringe. The harvested fat cells are then purified. In the second procedure, which takes place on the same day, the fat is injected into the breast through small incisions.
The breast fat grafting procedure takes anywhere from 3 to 6 hours to perform under general anesthesia, or local anesthesia with sedation, depending on the preference of the patient and surgeon. Because some of the injected fat is re-absorbed by the body, some people may require additional fat grafting procedures to achieve ideal results.
Healing and Recovery After Breast Fat Transfer
Your initial recovery period may take 1 to 3 days. Mild postoperative pain and swelling, which can be managed with prescription medication, are typical. A patient can return to work and other light activities after one week. The complete healing process may take several weeks depending on the complexity of the procedure.
Mammograms and Breast Fat Grafting
Routine breast screening is very important and must be continued as indicated before and after any breast enhancement surgery. Mammograms are safely performed and evaluated after breast fat transfers. There may be some changes after surgery as with any breast surgery(reductions and augmentations) that radiologists are typically able to distinguish from disease processes. Oil cysts and calcified fat may occasionally be seen after such surgeries, and are easily diagnosed and treated.
Cost of Breast Fat Grafting
The cost of breast fat grafting differs from one patient to another due to the customized nature of the procedure. The total price will include the liposuction procedure. Cost will be impacted by the amount of fat transferred, the time required to perform the surgery, and various clinic fees.
An individualized treatment plan with estimated prices will be provided at your consultation. Our knowledgeable office staff can provide information on acceptable forms of payment and guide you through available financing options.
